(available on any of our three WordProc applications)
Formatting is the term we use when we control how text in a word processed document will LOOK when it's printed.
Typically, you can change the look of text on the page using the toolbar:
Alignment
(ie. Left, Center, Right, Justify)
Font
(ie. Times, Arial, Comic Sans etc.)
Font Size
(ie. 10pt, 12pt, 14pt)
Style
(ie, Bold, Underline or Italicize)
Challenge - Add a stock "Graphic"
Locate the program called "Character Map" under START | PROGRAMS | ACCESSORIES | SYSTEM TOOLS
Scan through the WINGDINGS or WEBDINGS font for an appropriate symbol for your menu
Copy that symbol into your menu below the title, and modify it's size appropriately
The idea behind this exercise is to use the PROPER formatting tools to create and EFFICIENT and FLEXIBLE document.
EFFICIENT means it doesn't waste an excessive amount of characters to try to get items aligned
FLEXIBLE means the text could be easily resized without disturbing the intended format
Using OpenOffice Writer, create a menu for a restaurant of your choice that is formatted like the one shown here. Try to be as efficient as possible, and concentrate on the ALIGNMENT of items in the list.
Step 1: Create a Title
Create a TITLE for your menu that has the following characteristics
CENTER Alignment
40 Point Font Size
BRUSH SCRIPT Font Face
BOLD Style
Step 2: Create your Menu Items
Type the name of your first food item, then hit the TAB key, followed by a price using dollars and cents.
Characteristics:
CENTER Aligned
20 Point Font
TIMES Font Face
Normal Style
Create a total EIGHT food items and prices with TABs between
Step 3: Adjust the Spacing
It's time to space out the menu
HIGHLIGHT the items (but NOT the title) on your menu, and use the dropdown menu:
FORMAT - PARAGRAPH
This is the PARAGRAPH FORMATTING dialogue
Look for the LINE SPACING and set it to DOUBLE
Click OKAY
The menu is now efficiently double spaced without having to hit extra ENTER keys in between.
